Women saved after spending three days in septic tank

There are many things in life that are fun falling into — a septic tank is not one of them.

An Oregon woman survived three days trapped in a septic tank after she fell down in a 3-foot (0.9-metre) deep sewage hole.

The woman, who wants to remain unidentified, was first discovered in the stinky predicament by her daughter.

“She hadn’t been heard from by her family for a couple days, over the weekend, so the family decided to drive up and check on her and that’s when they found her down in the tank and called 911 to get us started to go up there,” Anderson, the division chief of the Estacada Rural Fire District told local news Fox 12.

Firefighters found the mom in the sewage hole. They quickly called in Clackamas County’s Technical Rescue Team to help with the rescue.

“We could see her in the tank, we could communicate with her,” said Anderson. “We just really needed to get some resources there.”

Officials said the woman was “alert enough to grab a ‘D-handle’.” Rescurers pulled the woman out within half an hour from the daughter’s 911 call.

Dirty and tired, but alive

Rescuers transported her in a rescue helicopter to a nearby hospital as a precaution. There doctors evaluated her for possible signs of infections and limited oxygen.

But how did she get trapped in the tank in the first place?

Some firefighters believe the woman was most likely doing maintenance work before her messy fall.

“There was a tractor onsite, a hole had been dug to expose the tank, and it looked like she had fallen through the lid but we’re a little bit unsure on how she actually ended up down into the tank,” said Anderson.

The woman should make a full recovery.
