Arizona shelter dog to star in “Lady and the Tramp” remake

It’s said that every dog has his day.

For one Arizona shelter dog, his day has come. He has landed a starring role in the soon to be released Disney remake of “Lady and the Tramp.”

“Monte,” a 2-year-old terrier mix, once called HALO Animal Rescue in Phoenix his home. He has since been adopted to his forever home.

Monte once stayed at the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley in Las Cruces, New Mexico. HALO Animal Rescue rescued Monte back in April 2018.

HALO is an organization that partners with other rescue organizations and shelters. That’s exactly how Monte ended up staying there, according to HALO President and CEO Heather Allen.

It seems that the Mesilla Valley animal shelter routinely sends groups of dogs to HALO. The groups can be as large as 50. Monte was part of the such a group. He arrived at HALO on April 26, 2018.

Shelter volunteers recognized that Monte was always excited to meet new friends. He loved to greet people and give kisses, and he of course loved attention. Monte also knew how to obey basic commands and loved to go on walks. He was a very good boy!

When Disney’s animal trainers arrived scouting from Hollywood, they let HALO know they were looking for shelter dogs. Monte was a clear choice for the important role.

Monte was adopted by the trainers. When he wasn’t filming for the movie, Monte seemed to be living a relatively normal and happy life.

“Lady and the Tramp” premieres November 12 on Disney’s new streaming service. The live action cast is brought to life with the help of voice actors.

Monte’s “voice” comes courtesy of actor Justin Theroux. Justin is a proud pet parent with his own rescue dog at home.

Disney adds that each the rescue dogs shown in the movie were adopted after filming concluded.
