Free Community College Now Available in California

California’s new budget will cover two free years of community college for first-time students.

Governor Newsom’s budget for 2019-2020 gives $42 million to fund the program. This program will be able to help approximately 33,000 students, KCRA reports.

Students must be attending a California public school to qualify for the program.

Students must be a first-time college student and enrolled full-time with at least 12 units per semester.

The state’s Promise Program already waives the first year of tuition at California community colleges. Now the second year is free.

The cost of tuition at most community colleges is about $1104 per year.

Newsom’s budget also grants an additional $41.8 million to grow the Cal Grant scholarship program.
