University of Texas Professor First Woman to Win ‘Nobel Prize’ for Math

AUSTIN, Tex. — A retired math professor from the University of Texas in Austin recently became the first woman to with the Abel Prize, often considered the Nobel prize equivalent in mathematics.

Professor Karen Keskulla Uhlenbeck was announced as the prize’s winner by the Oslo-based Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. The organization said in a press release that Keskulla Uhlenbeck’s “fundamental work in geometric analysis and gauge theory which has dramatically changed the mathematical landscape.”

Uhlenback gave an appreciative interview with the local police:

“Many thanks to the Norwegian Academy and the institutions and people who have contributed to what has been so far a full and interesting life. I hope that my selection for this award demonstrates that a great variety of individuals are capable of contributing to mathematics at the highest level.”

The President of the University of Texas, Greg Fenves, posted a congratulatory message to Keskulla Uhlenbeck on Twitter.

Uhlenbeck is currently working as a guest lecturer at Princeton University. Soon, she will travel to Norway to receive the award from King Harald V in a ceremony on May 21.
