Texas Principal Reads Bedtime Stories to Students on Facebook Live

BEAUFORT, Tex. — A Texas principle has taken it upon herself to make sure that every child in her school gets a bedtime story.

Every Tuesday night at 7:30pm, Homer Drive Elementary School Principal Belinda George sets up her iPhone to capture her reading a children’s book.

“I want to extend what I do past 4 pm. I’m not in every child’s home, so I don’t know if all or any of them have someone to read to them at night. This is just a way to give the children that exposure,” George said in an interview with The Enterprise.

The Tuesday night Facebook Live sessions, which George has dubbed “Tucked-in Tuesdays”, have been a huge hit with her students.

“Kids will come up to me Wednesday and say, ‘Dr. George, I saw you in your PJs reading!,” she said. “They’ll tell me their favorite part of the book.”

George started the Tuesday night stories for her students back in December of 2018. Since then, the stream has picked up attention from students and parents from around the country.

Students that comment during the story usually will get a shout-out from George. It’s easy to see why many feel connected to George through the Facebook streams.

When asked why she gives up her time each Tuesday night, George responded “I know if I don’t reach them outside of school I never reach them in school.”
