KOLKATA — Doctors at a Kolkata hospital were able to wake a 65 year old patient from a coma using a multi-sensory therapy that involved the intense stimulation of each of his five senses.

Janardhan Bhattacharya was at his home on October 19 when he suffered a hemorrhagic stroke. After being airlifted to a private hospital nearby, he quickly slipped into a coma.

After traditional medicine was deemed to not be improving the patient’s condition, doctors elected to try this unconventional treatment. For the auditory portion of the therapy, a classically trained violinist played for
Bhattacharya. To stimulate his senses, doctors placed roses and tobacco under his nose.

Light therapy was used to stimulate his vision. Salt was given to activate the patient’s sense of taste and care givers provided gentle touch to help
Bhattacharya begin to feel the world around him once again.

Doctors tracked his response to the treatment very closely using the Glasgow Coma Scale. According to attending physician Dr. Sandeep Kumar Kar, a score of two within fifteen days demonstrates notable patient responsiveness to the treatment.

Bhattacharya met this benchmark within a week of beginning the therapy. He now breathes without assistance, responds to spoken communication and is able to see, feel and move his fingers. Doctors are hopeful that his condition will continue to improve.
